Abstract
Malnutrition remains a major contributor to child morbidity and mortality globally, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. In Ghana, despite numerous health interventions, malnutrition among children under five persists, often driven by gaps in maternal knowledge. This study assessed the level of knowledge among mothers regarding the causes of malnutrition in children under five years of age at Asankrangwa Catholic Hospital. A descriptive cross-sectional design was used, involving 205 mothers selected through systematic random sampling. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed with SPSS version 25.0. Results revealed that while mothers were knowledgeable about some immediate causes, such as early weaning and breastfeeding practices, many lacked awareness of key underlying factors including poverty, frequent infections, and poor sanitation. Healthcare workers were the primary source of information for most respondents, yet significant knowledge gaps remained. The study highlights the need for expanded and more targeted health education programs that address both direct and indirect causes of malnutrition. Improving maternal understanding of these factors is essential to reducing the burden of childhood malnutrition in Ghana and similar contexts.
