THE ROLE OF COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKERS IN REDUCING MATERNAL MORTALITY IN RURAL COMMUNITIES OF SIERRA LEONE

Abstract
Background: Maternal mortality remains a major public health concern in Sierra Leone, particularly in rural areas where access to quality healthcare services is limited. Community health workers (CHWs) have been recognized as key actors in bridging the gap between underserved populations and formal health systems, contributing to improved maternal health outcomes.
Methodology: A cross-sectional descriptive study using a quantitative approach was conducted among 580 participants, including women of reproductive age, CHWs, and community stakeholders. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed using SPSS, employing descriptive statistics, correlation, chi-square, and regression analyses.
Results: Findings revealed that CHW services such as health education, antenatal care promotion, home visits, and referral systems significantly improve maternal health outcomes. A strong positive correlation (r = 0.684) was observed between CHW services and maternal outcomes. Regression analysis showed that CHW services significantly predicted maternal health outcomes (β = 0.684, p < 0.001), explaining 46.8% of the variance. Additionally, frequent CHW visits were significantly associated with safer deliveries.
Conclusion: CHWs play a critical role in reducing maternal mortality risks in rural Sierra Leone. Strengthening CHW programs through improved training, supervision, and policy support is essential for sustainable maternal health improvements.
